Over 8,000 organizations around the world accept the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) as an evaluation of an individual’s proficiency in the English language. Individuals can decide between two versions of the test, General or Academic, which ultimately depend on their academic or professional aims or visa requirements. In both versions of the test, the listening and speaking portions are the same but the reading and writing portions are different. The Academic version of the test evaluates the English language proficiency necessary for success in an academic and higher education setting. The General Training portion of the exam analyzes an individual’s practical English language skills and is generally a requirement of visa applications if you are looking to immigrate to an English speaking country such as the UK, Australia, or New Zealand. The EILTS exam is comprised of four components: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
The Listening portion has a time limit of 40 minutes and involves listening to either a monologue or dialogue which are then followed by a series of questions.
The Reading section is made up of three sections which differ in length depending on which version of the test the individual is taking. This section of the exam, regardless of which test version, has a time limit of 60 minutes.
The Speaking section has a short duration of 11 to 15 minutes and is given in an interview style. The questions that may be encountered are on general topics such as hobbies, interests, family, and so on.
The Writing portion, which is different for the Academic and General tests, has a time limit of 60 minutes. In the Academic version of the test, the test taker is required to fulfill two tasks: describe a chart, graph, or diagram, and respond to a given argument. In the General version of the test, there are also two tasks: describe a situation or write a letter and write a short essay.
