More than 9,000 higher learning institutions and agencies in over 130 countries accept the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). This test allows students the opportunity to prove they can communicate ideas effectively in different situations by simulating university classrooms and campus-life communication. TOEFL contains four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.
The Reading portion consists of about four to six 700 word passages followed a series of five different types of in-depth questions on these passages. This section is about 60 to 100 minutes long.
The Listening section is comprised of two student conversations and four academic lectures or discussions, which are roughly three to five minutes each in length followed by a series of questions. This section is approximately 60 to 90 minutes in length.
The Speaking portion consists of a total of six tasks with questions on familiar and academic topics in which the test-taker is expected to answer with clear and coherent answers. This portion of the test is approximately 20 minutes.
The Writing section is the final part of the test and involves two tasks. In the first task, the test-taker must read a passage and then listen to a short lecture or conversation on the same topic after which he is required to write a structured essay, answering specific questions regarding the relationship between the two passages. The second writing task requires the test-taker to write a structured essay giving his opinion or view of a familiar topic. This portion of the test is approximately 50 minutes.
